15th Summer School 2008

Dr Edith Copley

Director of Choral Studies at North Arizona University

is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University, where she conducts the acclaimed Shrine of Ages Choir and teaches graduate courses in choral conducting and choral literature. Her choirs have toured Western Europe and China and have performed at many U.S. music education and choral events.

Prior to her appointment at NAU she served as assistant and interim principal conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Chorus where she prepared choral works for the late Robert Shaw, James Conlon, Jesus Lopes-Cobes and Eric Kunzel.
In 1995 Dr Edith Copley became the first woman to conduct the classical subscription series of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra.
She has conducted all-state honour choirs in 13 US states, and is in high demand as a leader for music festivals and conventions throughout the United States.
She has conducted international choral festivals in Germany, Netherlands and Japan.

Graeme Morton

Director of Music at St Peter’s Lutheran College, Brisbane, and conductor of the St Peter’s Chorale. He is Director of the Lucian Singers at Christ Church Anglican Church, St Lucia, was co-founder and the first conductor of Australian Voices and is conductor of the Brisbane Chamber Choir. He has a Master of Music (organ) from the University of Queensland. He has been a Churchill Fellow, granted to observe choral leadership in North America. His choirs have toured Finland, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, UK, North America and New Zealand.

Graeme has lectured in the summer programme at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey; and he was, in 1996, Visiting Professor in Choral Music at St Olaf College in Minnesota.
His compositions are published by Augsburg Fortress, Kjos Music and Morton Music.

In performances, recording, commissioning, publishing and in his weekly 4MBS radio programme Graeme fulfils a mission to champion Australian choral music.
The full leadership team

Dr Colin Brumby, composer of operas, concertos, symphonies, orchestral and chamber works, film and ballet scores, Colin has a large repertoire of choral works, miniature and large-scale.

Eric Austin-Phillips, composer of symphonic and chamber works, has written over 40 works to commission, including a range of choral scores. Colin and Eric will each present a selection of their own works, and will offer a session each as consultant to choral composers and arrangers.

Dr Andre Thomas

is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Choral Music Education at Florida State University. He has a degree in music education, a Masters in piano performance and a Doctorate in choral conducting.
He is in demand as a choral clinician, choir director and adjudicator throughout the US, and in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia. In 1998 he conducted the World Youth Choir in China and the Philippines, and in 1999-2000 in Europe. In 1999 the Florida State University Singers was guest choir in Vietnam.
He is a distinguished composer and arranger published by Hinshaw, Mark Foster, Fitzsimmon, Lawson Gould, Earthsongs and Heritage.
At Florida State University he conducts several choral ensembles and teaches choral conducting. He has been President of the Florida chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and is President-Elect of the Southern Division of ACDA.


Carl Crossin

conductor, educator and composer, is well known and respected throughout Australia. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the University of Adelaide, he also studied choral conducting in the US and Britain. He is Director of Choral Music, Head of the Music Studies Program and Lecturer in Conducting at the Adelaide University Elder School of Music. He has taught and conducted across Australia and in Britain.
Carl is Founder/Director of the Adelaide Chamber Singers, the Elder Conservatorium Chorale and the University of Adelaide chamber choir Adelaide Voices. He guest conducted the Melbourne Chorale in 2004 and the Sydney Philharmonia Motet Choir in 2005.
His choral compositions include Caritas, performed by ACS in the US in 2002 and Dance of the Daughters of Eve, on CD sung by the vocal trio Eve.
